Chicken Hill Academy

Tainan Bars and Pubs

Average: 4.3 (6 votes)

I just moved here a couple months ago and am still exploring this interesting city... the other day, while i was having my usual safari, I found this amazing place - chicken hill academy.
I know there's loads of old/new fusion style bars in Tainan, but CHA is definitely my favorite one. This website has helped me in many ways so I'd like to contribute something as well.

It's a really laid back place. Unlike some pretentious, polished bars/pubs with staff on their high horses, CHA and the owner "XiGua"(means watermelon in Mandarin) offer you a vibe like an old friend's living room. (That's how I felt!) I think it gets even better if you can speak Taiwanese. I can't but my Taiwanese friends had a lot of fun talking to XiGua. and according to him, his antique collection "helped" many other bars/pubs here. He does have a lot of crazy stuff. e.g. million NT stereo and 50-inch TV with old columns from a temple on the side...lol

Oh, and it's not super cheap nor ridiculously expensive. Minimum charge is 200/person but all of their beer comes in huge size bottles. Plus free snacks. (They serve this super duper delicious bean curd, and some fruits. Yum!)

CHA opens everyday from 8pm till whenever (as long as people are still drinking...says XiGua).

Thanks for the contribution.  Any cool place listed here will help the place and new foreigners for years to come.

Tried and true, a Tainan

Tried and true, a Tainan icon.

Sounds interesting enough!

Sounds interesting enough! Will check it out! :)

From what I've heard (since

From what I've heard (since I've been going there at least twice a week), they are having some problem with their business since the economy depression. Not too many young kids know about their place and the older customers have "real" lives to worry about.

It makes me kinda sad seeing two sincere people, both over 50, not knowing what to do with the rapid-changing market nowadays. I helped them set up a website/blog but there's only that much I can do.

Anyway, if you're looking for a laid back place where you just wanna get something to drink and/or have a chilled night with firneds without all the other hassle, Chicken Hill is what you're looking for.

Just visited this place last

Just visited this place last night. Very nice! I was expecting something dustier and dive-y, but it's actually pretty clean and cozy. Excellent decor, looks like your crazy uncle's living room. Awesome sofas that you can just sink into...

Feels like CHA should appeal to the same younger crowd going to lounge bars like Kinks. After 1am we were the only people there, but it didn't feel awkward at all. Still, I hope business picks up, because XiGua was cool. We will be back. :)
