What can I do during the day in Tainan?
Hi, I am coming to Tainan City for 3 weeks to see my Taiwanese fiance on 28th August. The problem is, she has just started full time work, Monday to Saturday so I am going to have a lot of spare time on my hands each day. Is there anything particularly interesting to do in TC? I know there are lots of Buddhist temples etc but that is not really my 'cup of tea'. I know there are some old heritage sites but again, I do not intend to go on some historical mystery tour so is there anything else to experience in TC? I did a little research oline and was deluged with history and buddhism so if anyone who can suggest anything in terms of activities and attractions, I will be very grateful. Is there a decent beach? Is there anywhere that is cool to go shopping? Are there any places that I can eat some authentic crazy stuff? Any help is appreciated, I do NOT want to be sat in Starbucks all day, twiddling my thumbs!! Bri

Speaking of "cup of tea",
Speaking of "cup of tea", why go to Starbucks when you can hang out in a tea shop and brew your own cuppa. Here's a decent place to do it:

There's no English website but if you can get there, you can order tea leaves, they give you a pot and some hot water. You could sit there whiling away your time. They'll probably teach you how to do it too. Kinda fun cultural activity.
For other tourism info, you can check out our collection of the TFAC, the Tainan Foreigner Assistance Center which could help nudge you in the right direction.

Also, take some time to visit the bustling night markets, especially if you're interested in trying out the local fare. But stay away from the stinky tofu. Ug, just take my word for it. :-)
Oh, and congrats on your nuptials. May you forever swim in the river of love.
Hehe yes the stinky tofu
Hehe yes the stinky tofu sounds dangerous!!
Wow thanks for your assistance. I am a bit of a tea freak so that sounds great. I'm bringing my fiances parents a selection of English teas. I'll check out the said links. Cheers Robert :)
Oh, here's another great
Oh, here's another great site:

Fantastic! All of the above
Fantastic! All of the above are now on my to-do list, thanks again :)
Try heading out to one of
Try heading out to one of the local "night" markets in the evening. You can try a lot of the authentic local foods including the "stinky tofu". Nice way to mingle with the locals as well!
BTW even though you don't know a word of Chinese you can still get by. Most Taiwanese know a basic level of English.
When in doubt, just point and nod your head (or grab your crotch if you need to go to the bathroom)!
GOOD LUCK & have fun in Tainan!

If you want to do some
If you want to do some tourist thingys then you could visit salt mountain, yes it is a pile of salt but still a nice trip to the salt fields. Out that way you can go on the old canal trip that takes you along the old small canal routes, nice birds and countryside.
There are also some great cycling routes out there.
The beach clean and tidy but it's pretty damn hot and sticky at the moment so it is best left to late afternoon.
When my family comes over they just wonder around the back streets, they always find some great little shops.
An pin fort is great especially with its side streets and then just stop in the old German trade house for a cool glass of German wheat beer. Always a favorite.
You can hire boats, surf boards or kiteboards down at the beach and if you can get up to the mountains or one of the dams there are some great hiking and cycling routes.
You can always come over to the mother in laws for a cup of tea. They sit on the corner and speak some Taiwanese-Japanese-Mandarin slang which is great to listen to but totally ********* to understand.
And then when you get fed up of stinky tofu and dumplings come to Willy's for some great pizza and a nice pint of draught beer.
sorry I had to put that in.
Hey, I will show you some

No shame in self-promotion, especially when Willy's is an awesome spot. I recommend the potato pizza.
