Typhoon Thread

john_johnstonson's picture

Just because I like talking about the weather, I thought a typhoon thread would be useful; especially here at the start of the season.  The nameless-as-yet 08W is forming just off the coast of the Phillipines.  It's a pissy little depression at the moment; but if all goes well, my Saturday classes might get cancelled.  These ones that come in from the South are the best ones, I always think.  The mountains don't get the chance to take the edge off.

Are you English and in your golden years or something?  C'mon, there must be something more interesting to talk about.

Then again, any topic that might give me some hope about relief from this oppressive heat would be welcome.  Sign me in.

I only became a national stereotype after I moved to Taiwan funnily enough; although you are wrong about the 'golden years'.  And what's wrong with talking about the weather? It's a British hobby steeped in a cold, wet and miserable history.

Jolly good old chap.

Talking about the weather is

Talking about the weather is timeless.

You can take the Brit out of Britain but you can never take the Britain out of the Brit.

I'm messin' witcha.  I was the first to put up a weather link to one of the sites I use almost daily, the central weather bureau.

That and train spotting.  The allure is a complete mystery to non-Brits.

Can't help you with that one

Can't help you with that one I'm afraid. It's a mystery to most of us too. Something to do with a innate compulsion to categorize in the national psyche, I would say. A bit like bird watching.
No chance of a typhoon day tomorrow.

Yeah, I saw it on the news.

Yeah, I saw it on the news. We have work and school.

What do you guys think of

What do you guys think of making a typhoon group? The group function can be really useful but it takes a little bit of understanding regarding how things work. Here is a writeup I made about it for anyone interested:

Groups

Let me know. It could be a decent way of organizing posts for Typhoons (there will be several at least).

Beautiful pic!! So are we

Beautiful pic!! So are we OFF Saturday or what? heh

Fuckin' A. 3 days of no water. This is nuts. Makes you appreciate it more when it's not there, eh?

We live in an apartment building and it seems like we're gonna be all right but the school I work at didn't have running water on the first floor. It was using water from the water tower for the other floors. I don't know how long that would last. Good thing the weekend is here.

I have no water either, but

I have no water either, but haven't asked around. Is that 3 days cut off citywide?

Only one class cancelled,

Only one class cancelled, yesterday, the rest are still on (damn)........have some water, no idea how long that's gonna last. Bloody hell, time to buy two/three of those 1 gallon tankers!! Crazy shit!

Rumor is a pipe burst and

Rumor is a pipe burst and the water was fouled by the heavy rains, so the water is off. There was a neighborhood announcement where I live in the afternoon. We filled the bathtubs up with water and hope things will return to normal soon. It isn't that strange for this to be happening here though. It seems like a yearly event.

Apparently the water's

Apparently the water's slowly being switched back on in different sections of town. And Jazz, what are you talking about "a yearly event"? I don't remember the last time water was turned off due to a natural disaster ever. They fix stuff or upgrade the pipes every once in a while but that's the only time I remember being cut off. I'm not defending Tainan's infrastructure, I just don't remember any calamity like this one before.

There were several days the water went out last year. Maybe it was for upgrading purposes or whatever but either way i was without water in my house for several days at different times of the year.

You might be right about the natural disaster related water outages in Tainan, but I have experienced them elsewhere in Taiwan. The longest of which was about 2 weeks. In the summer. Yummm... I luckily lived in the only section of town that had water, needless to say I had quite a few friends over for showers...
